After twenty years of making exhibitions of modern and contemporary art for museums and galleries worldwide, Joanne Bernstein now brings her expert eye to garden design.
With a trained sense of colour and space she creates beautiful gardens. Having worked to the highest international museum standards, she ensures quality and absolute attention to detail.
Her own garden, now three years old, opens to the public for charity under the National Gardens Scheme. It was featured on the BBC’s flagship gardening programme, Gardeners’ World, on 6 March 2015 (click on the link below), to demonstrate principles of good design. Several magazines will feature the garden in 2015, and it will be included in a book by the horticultural expert Noel Kingsbury, to be published in 2016.
About the Designer...
Joanne has a BA in Art History and an MA in Gallery Studies and Critical Curating. During her career as a curator, she organised exhibitions at the Tate, Hayward Gallery and Barbican Art Gallery, among others.
Joanne completed a three-year Diploma (NOCN) in Garden Design at Capel Manor Horticultural College and is based in London. She is a Pre-Registered Member of The Society of Garden Designers.
Her approach to garden design is informed by her knowledge of the history of art and architecture, and her love of plants and landscape.
Our purpose is to create outdoor living spaces that both complement and enhance our clients’ homes and are tailored to meet their needs.
This is where we determine the broad scope of a project. We will walk through the garden and explore the client’s wish list, their likes and dislikes. We’ll discuss a rough budget and possible time-scales. From this meeting Joanne will draw up a client brief.
The garden is carefully measured, all existing features recorded and the soil tested. Knowing the exact conditions of the site ensures we create a garden that will flourish.
Joanne will produce a concept drawing and sketches for discussion. From there she will draw up a detailed Presentation Plan for the client’s final approval.
She will then consider plants that are suitable for the soil, aspect and climate, taking into account year-round structure, seasonal colour, focal points and screening. A Planting Plan will show the locations, sizes and quantities of plants.
Joanne can send drawings and specifications to recommended landscape contractors for pricing.
Once construction begins, Joanne can make regular site visits to monitor progress and ensure the design is implemented correctly and to the highest standards.
Working with trusted nurseries, we can source and order plants, take delivery on site, and set them out for planting.
We can draw up a detailed maintenance schedule and advise on the on-going care of the garden as the garden matures.
Joanne was the perfect choice for our difficult shaped garden. Her curatorial background combined with her horticultural experience was invaluable as ideas of balance, proportion and colour came into play. Some clever innovative ideas gave a completely different perspective; something we could not have envisaged ourselves. She was delightful to work with – I mean literally as lots of communal digging took place! She is enthusiastic, open to suggestions and as our first experience of working with a designer someone I would certainly recommend.

Joanne helped us transform a modest and conservative London garden into something unusual, beautiful and surprisingly wild. Aside from the design challenges, she had to deal with our nerves (mainly mine regarding the loss of a lawn) and indecision. Despite this she managed to guide us reassuringly and give us the garden we wanted and one we love.

Joanne managed to transform a backyard into a soothing garden space, contemplative to sit in, and very attractive to look at, while bearing in mind my requirement for minimum maintenance.

Joanne introduced new planting in my mature garden last spring. I have enjoyed working with her and learnt loads about soil, plants, perspective, texture, garden design and even a bit of English garden history. Her passion for gardening and garden design is obvious and her attention to detail commendable.
